![]() ![]() To guide students through the various dimensions, the team takes Arthur Square carefully through Pointland, Lineland, and Spaceland, explaining with terrific visuals just how each dimension is formed. ![]() Women are no longer the lesser of the sexes (they are polygons just like the men one woman even serves as a boss), and the main character, now named Arthur Square, is given a granddaughter (appropriately named “Hex”). To make that happen, they must take a little artistic license. In their adaptation of the book, the creative team behind Flatland: The Movie has the difficult job of condensing all this material into a half-hour production aimed at children. Throughout the book, the reader is well aware of the first, second, and third dimensions, but Abbott’s aim is to open our minds to the possibility of a fourth (and higher) dimension-how these dimensions could exist and how we could possibly conceive of them. ![]() Later, Square is visited by a sphere who attempts to introduce him to the world of three dimensions. The second half of the book focuses on Square’s journey (in a dream) to Lineland, a world of only one dimension, and the square’s futile attempt to explain to the residents of Lineland his world of two dimensions. ![]() ![]() ![]() The strange course of the Yorkshire Derwent (which rises near the sea and turns inland) meanders through the book. The rivers are primarily British, including West Country torrents (the Dart and East Lyn), swollen giants (the Severn and Thames), rocky Welsh canyons, Pennine white water classics, the salmon highways of Scotland, the gin-clear chalk rivers of the Yorkshire Wolds, and the astonishing slot canyon of Hell Gill. The voices are those of friends, writers, poets, singers, conservationists, adventurers, river managers, campaigners, farmers, artists, historians, archaeologists. The result is a book of many rivers and many voices. Finally visiting the Rawthey years later, Amy-Jane realises how much she misses the connection to the natural world she always felt when she was close to rivers, and so begins a new phase of exploration. Kate never came home, and her death left her devoted family and friends bereft and unmoored. ![]() On New Year's Day 2012, Amy-Jane Beer's beloved friend Kate set out with a small group of others to kayak the river Rawthey in the Howgill Fells. A visit to the rapid where she lost a cherished friend unexpectedly reignites Amy-Jane Beer's love of rivers setting her on a journey of natural, cultural and emotional discovery. ![]() ![]() Whatever destiny awaits, it’s Edwina’s to finally control. ![]() How else to explain Edwina’s sudden prophetic visions? John Adams assumed that Independence and the founding of new governments were so closely tied that they amounted to the same thing. Nowhere was the ending of the old regime an end in itself everywhere it was intimately connected with the founding of new governments that marked a more dramatic departure from the past than what Parliament achieved in 1689. Here she provides a glimpse into "the American mind" and how it elevated what could have been a mere rebellion into the creation of a radical rethinking of government and citizenship that would lead to America's great experiment in democracy.
